Muslims beliefs in angels

Muslims have firm belief in the existence of angels as this knowledge comes from the lord of all lords, Allah Almighty. Angels carry out various duties and responsibilities.  Some are responsible for matters of the universe.  Some are responsible for the seas, or the mountains or the wind. The religion Islam has five basic pillars which includes following:

  • Belief in Allah
  • Belief in Angels
  • Belief in Holy Book
  • Belief in Messengers
  • Belief in Judgement Day

Many elements of our religion are unseen and completely based on firm and blind belief in Allah. The concept of angels is also a part of hidden world, one that has not been witnessed by any individual who is alive. Holy prophet (PBUH) has revealed the information and knowledge about afterworld, angels, paradise and hell. The angels were created by God in order to worship and obey Him and it is put in Holy Quran in following way:

“They, (angels) disobey not, the Commands they receive from God, but do that which they are commanded.” (Quran 66:6)

Allah’s most beloved servants (angels) are created from shiny light (Noor). Hazrat Muhammad (may Allah’s mercy be on him) stated that Allah Almighty has made angels from light. Angels carry out God’s commands without flinching or hesitating.  Each angel has a duty or function.  Some angels guard and accompany human beings, others are messengers. We have no exact knowledge of when first angel was created but Muslims are well aware of the fact that angels existed before the creation of humankind.

Quran explains that God told the angels of His intention to create a vicegerent on earth. (2:30)

An Arabic word “dhoo mirrah” is used for angels in Holy Quran. This world is described by Islamic scholars as tall, beautiful and full of light in appearance. There exists no information about how exactly angels looks like or what gender they have but what is explained to us is that they are winged and big in size. From the traditions of Prophet Muhammad we know that the angel Gabriel’s great size filled

“The space between heaven and earth and that he had six hundred wings”.
