Marriage, A mutual effort of husband and wife
In the religion of Islam, marriage is considered as the most pure and lovable relationship where two persons who are destined to end up together by the will of Allah Almighty willfully accept each other. Islam stresses much about its importance and purity. Muslims are encouraged to develop this bond as Holy Prophet PBUH set successful examples of happy cheerful and successful marriages. Islam puts a lot of emphasis on the rights of both, husband and wife when they are a part of legal relationship. Holy prophet stated that marriages should be handles in a way that it leads to new familial bonds where children grow up with physical and psychological stability. It is also added that devoutness and moral integrity must be observed between spouses.
Allah Almighty has granted certain rights to husband and wife and made its accomplishment mandatory upon both of them. It is stated in Holy Quran that a couple should be engaged in such activities which promotes and strengthen their marital bond. It is not the responsibility of one person but both, to handle the ups and downs with complete responsibility and each others’ support. Qur’an states, “And women have rights similar to those of men over them in kindness.” (Soorat Al-Baqarah, 2:228) Therefore, tolerance and kindness are required to create a prosperous life and help build a strong family.
The last messenger of Allah has repeatedly mentioned in his hadiths that husbands must treat their wives with honor, dignity, love and patience. They should never use their power over them or else they will be held questionable in front of Allah Almighty on the day of judgement. It is stated in Quran: consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may happen that you hate a thing wherein Allah has placed much good. (An-Nisa’: 19)
The role of the wife is summarized in the verse that women have rights even as they have duties, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree over them. Allah Almighty says, “And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them. Allah is Mighty and Wise.”
